Mommy, why is there a server in the house?

Mommy, why is there a server in the house? And just when you thought all of Microsoft was boring geeks, and they’d never come up with any of that ingenious, guerilla, viral marketing that’s oh so state of the art right now, you see this baby on digg.com and have to admit: Nicely done Mr. Gates.

So, behold and read through “Mommy, why is there a server in the house?” by the fictitious Ph.D. Tim O’Connor (aka Microsoft Marketing). It was apparently handed out for free at CES2008 by Microsoft. And I personally don’t see it as an attempt to brainwash your kids into making you buy a home server – it’s rather a precious bit of ingenious ironical marketing. Still, your kids might make you buy a home server if let it lying around the house, so watch out.

Hmm I really don’t see any real irony there, it’s pretty much just a light-hearted Microsoft ad that spoofs children’s books. Quite well done, but I’d expect something more controversial (or funny) from a viral ad…

The fact that they only handed it out at the CES and never actually featured it anywhere on the web actually leads me to think that this was not really planned as a viral ad but rather just a cool little inside-joke swag.

Speaking of MS@CES, I actually loved the video they did for Bill Gates: http://www.tweakvista.com/Article39218.aspx

yeah but you have to see that the digg link did say something about microsoft brainwashing children in its title. and i thought its fairly obvious its not really a childrens book, therefore ironic. And i also thought its funny as hell.
