WP Showroom

September 17th, 2009 by naabster

Current Version: v0.1b2

The old version of this gallery, ANIga, does not work with the latest Version of Wordpress. Also it was not really that great – so I wrote a new gallery plugin based on it: WPshowroom.

You can see it working here on this site!

I didn’t submit this plugin to the Wordpress Plugin Repository yet – so YOU can be a beta tester!

Main Features:

  • Picture Gallery completely integrated in Wordpress
  • Group your pictures in Albums and an unlimited level of Child-Albums
  • Allow your visitors to comment on every picture
  • Restrict access to Albums and Pictures based on Wordpress Userlevels / Capatibilites
  • Support for EXIF information
  • Order Albums like you want
  • Display a picture caption for each pic
  • Easy prev / next navigation for pictures
  • Completely configurable Layout (example theme files for the default Wordpress Theme included)
  • Easy flash based Upload
  • Configure unlimited thumbnail / picture sizes – you can display your pictures in all sizes you like
  • Remake thumbnails for existing pictures if you need another size
  • Manage Pictures and Albums one by one or in batch
  • Nice Permalinks for everything
  • Widgets: random pictures, latest comments (for the whole blog, but with adjusted links for picture comments), latest galleries, …
  • Deinstall script – completely remove WPshowroom from your Database :(

Whats still missing (planned or in development):

  • Tags
  • Paged thumbnail display
  • Watermarks for thumbnails
  • Slideshow
  • More JS / Ajax stuff – sort pictures and albums even better
  • Support for all kinds of lightboxes
  • Zip File upload
  • Support for PHP4 – probably not :)
  • More Themes
  • Multi-language support
  • Better Usermanagement: A gallery for every Wordpress User of your blog?
  • Picture rating
  • Whatever you like and I am able to code! I am looking forward to hear your feedback!

What you need:

  • Up-to-date version of Wordpress (2.8+)
  • PHP5 (if you’re still running PHP4 or less: PHP6 is almost here, go and upgrade to PHP5 already, lazy you!)
  • GD Library
  • gettext support for EXIF information
  • Ability to give folders write-access (should be no problem if you managed to install wordpress)
  • Basic Wordpress-theming ability to adjust the look to your theme (but the default should work with most Themes)
  • Pictures…

How to install:

  1. It is always wise to make backups of your files and your database!
  2. Download and de-zip the plugin.
  3. You’ll see the basic Wordpress structure. Copy the folders to the appropriate location on your webserver:
“WPshowroom” goes in your plugin directory
the stuff in “themes/default” goes in your default theme directory (if you are not using the default theme copy it to your current theme directory)
  4. Make the “gallery” folder (and its subfolders) in the “WPshowroom” plugin folder writable by the webserver (CHMOD 777)
  5. Acitvate the plugin in Wordpress.
  6. Thats it. Grab a beer.

What now?

  • You will see a new menu in your Wordpress dashboard called “WPshowroom” – thats where all the action is.
  • Use the Settings page to adjust your settings.
  • There is already a sample Album – edit or delete it.
  • Upload some pictures and follow the steps there. The first step lets you upload pictures from your disk. On the second step you need to assign the uploaded pictures to an album. The third step finally makes all the thumbnails.
  • Look at your blog: You’ll see a new page – this is where your new gallery is located
  • Adjust the theme files to your needs.
  • Activate the new widgets if you need them. If you use the Default latest comments Widget you should use the new one to get proper links to the picture comments.
  • There are sample htaccess files in the gallery folder – I would recommend using them if you want to protect your pictures. If you want to relocate the gallery folder, you have to adjust the new path settings on the Options page.
  • Ask here if you are stuck.
