I.D. & Baobinga – Bass Music Sessions, free/donation album

Just came accross this new I.D. & Baobinga release called Bass Music Sessions.

Basically the album is a free download , but you’re presented with a donation option, with all of the money going to the Dove House Hospice, England.

I’d say go ahead and donate at least 10 times more than the paypal cut (30 pence) for this download, it’s a really heavy release, this one. They could also have kept at least a small cut for themselves in my opinion, but hey, at least karma won’t punish them (“hi crabman”) for it.

Mount Kimbie & James Blake

hf023_aAh was ein Gefühl. Ich hüpf hier grad im Büro innerlich auf meinem Drehstuhl wie ein kleines blondes Groupiemädle umher. Dass ich zu so was im zarten Alter von 26 noch imstande bin verdanke ich Mount Kimbie.

Auf der Homepage ihres Labels Hotflush Recordings taucht heute die neue Mount Kimbie EP mit der CatalagNo HF23 auf. Die zwei Produzenten aus .. na?? .. ja! .. SE London schaffen es meiner Meinung nach einzigartig, Playfulness und smoothen Funk mit Rhythmen und harter Basstiefe zu verbinden. Raus kommen dermassen freundliche Arschshaker und Bassmonster, dass es mir beim Preview grad kalt den Rücken runterläuft und ich erwähnte groupiehafte Gefühle entwickle, obwohl ich die Nummern schon länger über div. James Blake – Air and Lack Thereof mit einem kleinen Preview @ Boomkat. Hört euch unbedingt die Titelnummer rein – noch mehr dicker Bassfunk. Es gibt also doch noch gute Musik, und wenn ich die Vice wäre, vielleicht weiblich noch dazu, würde ich jetzt irgendwas schreiben von wegen meine Muschi wird feucht, oder so.

Dub FX

Heute poste ich mal keine News aus meiner neuen Heimat. Nein, ich feature hier und jetzt einen Musiker aus Bristol, der Straßenmusik auf ein neues Level hievt.

Dub FX heißt er. Und das hier ist ein sehr beeindruckendes Video seines Schaffens.

Gefilmt wurden viele seiner öffentlichen Auftritte von Ben Dowden. Auf seinem YouTube Channel gibt es zahlreiche weitere Videos von Dub FX zu sehen. Nehmt Euch die Zeit und schaut sie Euch an. Wird einigen bestimmt gefallen…fallen…fallen…fallen…allen…allen…allen……………………………..

Berlin und Harmonic 313 basst scho.

Ja wer hätte das gedacht?

1. Ich schreibe intuitiv auf deutsch (und farbig) – das muss der Einfluß meines coBloggers und Lieblingsberliners Joda sein – und nebenher an der Diplomarbeit.

2. Berlin hinterlässt weitere Spuren, Risse im Trommelfell und vernachlässigt die EC Karte…
… denn der wahnsinnig laute und noch wahnsinniger gute Flying Lotus am 26.4. im Berghain hat nur 12 Euronen gekostet. Und er war so gut. Nach einem echt beeindruckenden ca. 1 stündigem Liveset fängt er an fremde Tracks nach Lotus style zu verwursten (u.a. Windowlicker mit Hydrant Game meine Damen und Herren), und legt zum Ende hin noch eine halbe Stunde Dubstep auf. Das ganze endet mit Chainsaw Calligraphy von 16Bit, welches er nach der Hälfte unterbricht und ins micro schreit:

  • “I’m just playing this shit so I feel like I’m in London, although I’m in Germany!”

Andere nennenswerte Zitate die mir hier grade spontan wieder einfallen sind auch

  • “Somebody in here bring me a joint! I’ll play this shit [straighter harter monotoner beat gleich zu anfang] all night long if you don’t bring me a joint!”
    und der Klassiker
  • “Damn [Nach ein paar ausrutschern], seems like I’m too drunk to use a computer.”

3. Harmonic 313 lässt uns ein Album raus

Und das anscheinend schon im Februar auf Warp. Ja warum sagt einem denn keiner bescheid? Da muss man erst den De:Bug feed lesen der einem bescheid gibt, dass eine neue Single samt Video rauskommt (auf dem feed zu sehen). Harmonic 313 hat mich bisher kräftig mit seinen Releases überzeugt und durchwandert mit weniger BPM auch mal Technoide gefilde (313 ist der Area Code von Detroit), also hört auf jeden Fall mal in das Album rein – Bässe sollen ja angeblich weniger schädlich für das Gehör sein, und das schlimmste was euch passieren kann ist dass einem die Luft weg bleibt.

Musical journeys written up: Podcasts & Producers

I’m spending my weekend afternoons in my university office, trying to finish up my project here before I will leave Lausanne to move back to Munich in a few weeks. Outside it’s grey and cold, but I manage to keep up my mood with some good music I come accross on the web. I’ve found some good stuff, some of which is noteworthy, so on to …

Releases

  • Floating Points:
    Was pointed towards him by Gilles Petersons show, and although he apparently hasn’t released anything yet officially, I am a fan already – web2.0 makes this possible i guess.
    He somehow reminds me of a little more electronic Flying Lotus. Check him out he’s worth it, and apparently releasing some stuff on soundcloud.com (a great webapp to share and discuss audio files, by the way). I was just listening to this here, and mumbled to myself “gott ist des fett, alder”. What do you think?

    Also, I love this track – good to hear some of the lotus’esque stumbling beats making their way into house:

  • Flying Lotus – L.A. EP 2×3
    Flying Lotus released the second remix E.P. of his groundbreaking album: I can deeply recommend this, good stuff. Especially the re”f”ix of “Secrets” (sorry, couldn’t find a better quality link) by Soundmurderer.
  • Zomby – Where Were U in ‘92?
    Missing fun on the dancefloor? Those amen breaks nowhere to be found? No more piano chords in the dance tracks? WRONG. Flashback album of the year:
    You’ll be raving through your livingroom on this one, and if you listen closely you might even notice it’s actually a brand new production and not a mixtape. I had very much fun with this, raving on my lab-seat. Youtube provides some previews of “Where were u in ‘92?” and “Euphoria”
  • Two more names to remember and check out: Pangaea & the german and friend of monolake (wow, didn’t expect that) T++. You can grab a the free track “Therefore Version 5″ by T++ from monolake’s download site. T++ has a release on Appleblim’s label Apple Pips, which released some very heavy  tracks which are all somewhere in between techno and dubstep and.. well, dubtechno – anyways, looks promising

Podcasts/Shows

  • I’ve sort of missed them, but listen to the more recent Mary Anne Hobbs shows, especially the Experimental: Best of 2008 show. Lots of great Dubstep and Dubtechno tunes, catching you up on whats been happening in 2008.
  • A very good weekly podcast is Rob Booth’s electronicexplorations, also mainly Dubstep and bassheavy Beats.
  • Last but not least, be sure to check out Appleblim’s podcasts (some of them are available on release on the rinse.fm blog for a short while) – you can find them in the usual sources pobably.

This concludes my bassheavy writeup for now, and though it might not be the newest stuff I’m linking to (I’m a few months behind the pulse) there’s a lot out there still to be discovered. Be sure to leave some comments, or further music linkage from the big ol web. Oh yeah, and happy new year!

Much needed dubbing: Appleblim Podcast

Unforseen consequences ladies and gentlemen: Got up quite early today and had a little time on my side so I put in the quite excellent podcast of Appleblim. After the first hour he plays a few tracks in a row which started my day even better – going snowboarding for 3 days in Saas Fee (IN YOUR FACES!) with my girlfriend tomorrow, so my mood was already quite good, but this was the final touch.

Most of them are remixes of tracks by Scuba released on Hotflush. I especially like the Marcel Dettmann remix of “From Within”. After the lsd turned out to be a little bit on the music and movie bloggish side the last posts, I thought I might as well share this goodness with you:
